Another Soo I 500 is in the books, but the 51st running of the historic event did not go as planned for some of the top teams, including both Bunke Racing teams, Christian Brothers Racing, and XLT Engineering to name a few.

Cadarette Collision Racing’s Troy DeWald came off a win on Thursday night in the Woody’s Challenge and was also the top qualifier for the I 500 which put him on the pole for Saturday’s show. Seven-time champion Gabe Bunke started along side him in the #2 spot.

The drivers all came off the line with a clean start and began to tick off laps. Sleds stayed tight-knit through the beginning of the race all trying to stay on the lead lap.

Shortly into the race, Bunke Racing ran out of brakes but were quick to make repairs. Soon after, Gabe Bunke had an off in turn three which put them 10 laps down. Both Gabe and teammate Aaron Christianson fought the whole race to gain back the laps but ended with a DNF due to mechanical issues.

Christian Brothers rider Re Wadena lead a good amount of the first 50 laps and was looking like a strong contender on the 52 sled. Defending Soo champion Zach Herfindahl, on the 17x sled, was holding the 2nd spot at the 50 lap point. Shortly after on lap 78 Herfindahl sent his sled into the bails taking the team out of contention.

Teammates Jordan Carlson, L.J. Quick, and Ryan McCaig of Hoos Racing made thier way to the front of the pack by lap 100 and held that lead through the next 50 laps.
Meanwhile, the CBR crew was hard at work trying to get Wes Selby onto the track after Zach’s crash. They eventually got the sled back out there but unfortunately had an issue with their track later on.
The Nelson-Bunke Racing crew, Taylor Bunke, Justin Tate, and Andy Wenzlaff, were running a good first 100 laps. On lap 110 they ended up pulling out and rebuilding their motor during the race. They got the sled back out by lap 200. Unfortunately, They blew a track on lap 485.
By lap 200, eight-time I 500 champion Corey Davidson and his teammates Eric Gausen and Dillan Dohrn found their way to the #1 spot. Later in the day they had a mechanical issue and ended in a DNF.
Cadarette Collision racing was fast on the track all week and continued to be during the 500 laps. They made their way to the front by lap 250.
The top 4 started to switch positions with each other the remainder of the race. Little Ceasers Racing took the lead going into lap 300.
Cadarette Collision Racing took the lead back in the last 100 laps carrying on to victory lane. Troy DeWald claimed his 3rd title with teammates Ryan Spencer earning his 1st and Bill Wilkes’ 2nd. Hoos Racing took 2nd place and Little Ceasers Racing rounded out the podium.
Even though CBR didn’t have the best day, Tyler Oettinger had a very impressive run. Re Wadena road at the beginning of the race and hurt his shoulder after an off. That left Oettinger to complete over 400 laps by himself. He finished the race coming through in 6th place.
