Minnesota’s Nathan Ferderer jumped into the lead near the end of the first lap of the AA main event and endured a race-long battle with Illinois’ Cody Barnes to win round two of the TImbersled Border Battle XC series presented by Custom Outfitters.

The fast and flowing course at Sugar Camp Track and Trail, featured perfect conditions with the exception of some heavy dust in the open areas. Austin Pogreba grabbed the row one holeshot  on a borrowed bike that he had picked up on the way to the race and led much of the first lap. Pogreba stayed in contention for just over one lap before having a rear sprocket bolt come off, locking up the rear wheel and spitting him out of the race.

Early on the top five riders maintained nearly a one minute gap from each other due in part to the visibility on the moto track at the start of the race. Ferderer and Barnes paced each other during the middle stages before Barnes mounted a charge at the end of lap four. Ferderer held on for a 24 second advantage at the finish to collect his second $1,000 payday in the series.

WIXC regular Brandon Houts battled with local standout Zach Herfindahl for the third spot throughout much of the race. Herf would also mount a charge on lap four and close the gap, but severely blistered hands prevented him from maintaining the pace. Herfindahl caught a huge cloud of Houts’ roost that settled in his gloves, grinding away a good portion of skin on both palms. Houts, who has not been riding as often as in the past, represented well for the Badger state and collected $300 for his efforts.

Following Herfindahl and rounding our the top five was national enduro regular JD Freibel. Mitchell Watson cleaned up with an overall win in the A class completing five laps with a time that put him seventh among all competitors.

Jay Mittelstadt was the overall winner in the B class and is in contention for the year end Timbersled snowbike kit with two strong rounds under his belt. Troy Horbaty made the long trip from Manitoba and was rewarded with an overall win in the C class, adding to his series point total in the Junior division.
