This was the start of test #1 and would be the best conditions these guys would see all day.

With 12-18″ of snow hammering central Minnesota, my racing buddy Troy Phillips and I hit the road for southern Indiana and the Red Fox national enduro. Since we weren’t going to be able to accomplish much on a local race we have been organizing we thought why not make a move and get in a little warm weather seat time. Plus, we had just finished a Steward Baylor replica build for a story in our upcoming issue of the magazine, so it was the perfect chance to meet up with the reigning champ and get some pics.

Often times I make these trips solo and catch up with the regular contingent of District 23 riders who frequent the nationals, but when I offered Troy the keys to the 2018 Tely Energy Racing 350 SX-F with .1 hour on the meter, he was in. Substantial overnight rain swirled into the heavy clay soil in the rolling coal country of Lynnville, Indiana and didn’t provide us with much in the way of local hospitality, but the same could be said for about 80% of the riders who struggled to finish more than two or three tests, so we took it in stride and called it a learning experience.

Nearly cooking a motor and making some ridiculous demands on my clutch meant I got to jump into the woods and catch the survivors on camera, rounding out the multi-purpose road trip.

Stew was happy with the build and even spotted a trick new set of SRT wheels that even he doesn’t have.
KTM factory mechanic Charles Marchant has been keeping Josh Toth’s ride in peak condition and Toth has rewarded the team with great results to start the season.
We have no idea who these guys are but nothing beats a multi-rider enduro pic. Right?

Likewise for row 108.
Baylor was covered in mud early, which meant he was probably catching and passing riders at a feverish pace.
Toth’s jersey, on the other hand, stayed a little cleaner but had visible battle scars.
Ryder Lafferty is on fire in the new Pro 2 class with two wins to start the year.
Any condition is a good condition for a NitroMousse.
Grant Baylor jumped out of the rut to make a pass and never missed a beat.
Another unidentified flying object expressing some sweet style jumping into the alley leading to the end of test #3.
Matt Stavish is a hero and mentor to every rider in D23 and I love his stories of not finishing his first several enduros. Every time I was struggling in axle deep mud, I kept getting an image of him just grinning in his helmet.
Stavish’s protege Nathan Ferderer has been on his game this season and was fourth in Pro 2.
Random ribbon shot.
By virtue of his season opening DNF, Thad Duvall started at the tail of the Pro 1 field and made his way to third.
Gratuitous eye candy photo.
Nick Fahringer making his way by just before in check #3.
Nick Davis raced his way to a Pro 2 podium for GasGas.
Ben Kelly just missed his second straight NEPG podium with a fourth.
Thanks to the Red Fox crew who laid out what would have been a really fun course had Mother Nature cooperated a bit more.
