We recently had a chance to catch our first American Rally Association event, held in the state forests of nearby North Central Minnesota. Watching the top 4wd Open cars line up for the start of a stage with turbos spooling and the engine bouncing off the rev limiter in anticipation of the green flag was worth the price of admission.

Seeing the cars drift through Super Special Stages and over twisty forest roads was a new experience that has to be seen to be believed. The ARA is dominated by the Subaru Rally Team USA squad but the series offers classes for cars all levels.

The ARA does a great job of letting fans interact with competitors, hosting a Park Expose at the start of each day where the cars and drivers are accessible for photos and autographs.

The weekend kicked off with a meet & greet at Muscatell Subaru in Moorhead, Minnesota
Miulti-time race winner and multi-time series Champion Travis Pastrana draws a crowd wherever he goes and Rally is no exception.
Pastrana was first out of the gate on a super greasy clay Super Special Stage at the fairgrounds in Detroit Lakes and ended his weekend 100 yards off the start after clipping a concrete barrier.
The mishap was compounded by center punching another barrier bringing the car and his race to a sudden stop.
Subaru Rally Team USA’s second car piloted by David Higgins, took a more cautious approach to the stage, although still not mistake free, and went on to win the event.

Although most of the action takes place in remote locations, VIP busses shuttle fans to key viewing points throughout the day.
The Red Bull crossroads jump is a legendary viewing spot during the Ojibwe rally.
Hundreds of fans gather at “the arch” with cowbells and air horns going at full tilt every time a car crests the flyaway intersection.
There’s no shortage of technology in rally. Jeff Seehorn competes in the 4wd Limited class at a cost of about 1/10 what the factory Subaru cars cost in 4wd Open.
Ironically, Seehorn and co-pilot Karen Jankowski are second overall in the series with just two rounds remaining in the season.
